Join the Movement: Support People Living with HIV/AIDS Battling Cancer in East Africa
HIV/AIDS remains a significant public health concern in East Africa, and its close association with cancer continues to compound the disease burden in the region.
Although expanded access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) has reduced AIDS-related deaths and improved life expectancy, many children living with HIV remain at elevated risk of HIV-associated cancers due to immune suppression and co-infection with oncogenic viruses. CLHIVs, especially in resource-limited and rural settings, face heightened vulnerability because of late diagnosis, limited cancer screening, and weak referral systems.
Recent reductions in international funding particularly from donors that have historically provided substantial support for HIV/AIDS care and treatment in EAC have placed growing strain on already fragile health systems. While progress has been made in integrating HIV and cancer services, significant gaps remain, and these gaps continue to cost lives. Addressing the dual burden of HIV and cancer in East Africa requires sustained investment in integrated prevention, screening, treatment, and palliative care within HIV services, alongside strengthened health systems and enhanced regional collaboration. Your support is critical to bridging these gaps and safeguarding hard-won gains in HIV and Cancer care.
